The Sea

Rising in roars the wallow-weaving waves
Dash, crash, receding, seething surf,
Blue-white bubbles in bursting raves,
Blink, wink, sink down. The turf
Thrives and thickens with height above the salt
In scanty tuft-padding, then soft bedding
Of green and juicy grass for the colt
And the cow. Down the loose, shedding
Rock and sand cliff, land slips
In numerous-sized particles. Ever on
The drowning dash sound around whips
Lash-swishing, surging its rage upon
The inscooped rocks. Whilst the quiet, calm lee
Feels not the wearing tearing of the sea.

and today

and today the rain
fell
millions of strings
plucked by the wind
quivering
spray their rhythm
spill their music
all over

Holy Communion

Lord, lying limp
On the tip of my tongue,
White in death shrouds
In the coldness of tomb, make your way
Down the bowels of limbo
And search me out
From their coils of vein –
Futility of living in death.

Rejuvenation

Monsoon rain on Sunday,
Creating a clamor in thunderstorm –
Lightning in the hall and thunder
Striking you with the fear of death:
For in your hardness of heart
Your have turned a bitter eye
On the workings of the Lord.

Resurrected – Unto Perfection

In the beginning was the Word,
And the Word was with God,
And the Word was God.

And in the beginning
Did God make
Everything that was made.

Practice does not make perfect

Practice does not make perfect
It never does
It never will

When I repeat doing something
I only make it into a habit

Holy Saturday

1st April, 1961 (the reversible year)

Holy Saturday,
And the rolled stone still,
And the world entombed in dark clouds
And the same hollow winds blowing past the sealed door
Blowing past millenniums,
Pass you
As you walk down the graveyard road
In the greyness of the great tomb of clouds.

Stand beneath

Stand beneath a tree as it blossoms with twinkling stars
And its leaves stir not.
The night is locked in with thick steel doors and double bars
And the sun is gone.
Not a breeze of hope to rouse or touch you even
Where you stand alone.
How long must you wait in the dark while the tree dreams of heaven
And your heart is a knot?

Driven

I keep going faster, faster,
The traffic behind pressing me on.
There’s no slowing down,
Only the straining of nerves
Against the risks I’m forced to take,
The unexpected, the unfamiliar turnings,
The disaster of someone else’s failing;
Hemmed in to exhaustion,
Foolishly there, cursing
Those around me.
And I must learn to set my sights
Wide at a middle distance,
Not too far, not too near,
With only quick glances at the suddenly gone –
Eyes, ears, hands, feet as though taut in battle
Against an inhuman impulse that may
Ram me too soon into the future,
Crush me into the past,
Or send me hurtling out of my mind.
And I long so for an easing,
Some break, some escape route
Back to life again
Where I can again
Be.

I await

I await anticipation
In the shadow of a question lurking
Withdrawing in my mind.
But when the blank gaze has set
It sags with weariness, like the heart
Or wrinkled skin grown old on bones.
